Why Boko Haram Terrorists Are Surrendering To Nigerian Army

Image
In the past few weeks, the news circle has been dominated by reports of repeated surrenders of Boko Haram terrorists to the Nigerian military. More than 2,000 terrorists were reported to have surrendered and branded ‘repentant’ by the Army, claiming adherence to international laws relating to ‘enemies willing to surrender’. Lai Mohammed, the Minister for Information and Culture, also said repentant Boko Haram terrorists should not be prosecuted but treated as prisoners of war. Though he later recanted, saying he only said they could not be killed and not that they could not be prosecuted. Amidst controversies trailing the legitimacy of reintegrating terrorists into society, there have been concerns and conversations on and off social media.  While loyalists of President Muhammadu Buhari see the massive surrenders of the insurgents as a great milestone, observers and critics are sceptical, wondering if the weekly parades of repentant terrorists are not mere propaganda. This has raised

Image
Reno Omokri has taken to social media to tackle the seeming ''hypocrisy'' of the Islamic police otherwise known as Hisbah in Kano state. Hisbah has made news on several occasions for the arrests and actions they have taken since they were commissioned in the state. The Islamic police in Kano last year made news when it arrested a barber for giving his customer a haircut perceived to be ''Haram''.  Reno in a tweet shared on his IG page, shared a photo of singer, Mayokun, with his haircut and wondered why the Hisbah police did not arrest him. ''Hypocrisy is when Kano Hisbah cuts off the un-Islamic haircut of the poor, yet leave the un-Islamic haircuts of those who attended Buhari’s son’s wedding. Or crucify Rahama Sadau over her dress, yet are pacified over the stylish dresses of the bride and her guests''

Apple announces plans to scan photos in people's phones for images of child abuse/pornography

Image
Apple has announced new updates to its software for iPhones and other devices saying it will start to scan U.S. iPhones for images of child sexual abuse. The decision by Apple to start scanning phones drew applause from child protection groups but security researchers say the system could be misused by governments like China, Belarus, and Nigeria looking to surveil the activities of its citizens. According to Apple,  the messaging app will use on-device machine learning to warn about sensitive content without making private communications readable by the company. The tool Apple calls “neutral match” will detect known images of child sexual abuse without decrypting people’s messages. If it finds a match, the image will be reviewed by a human who can notify law enforcement if necessary. But not everyone likes the new software update. Top cryptography researcher, Matthew Green of Johns Hopkins, was concerned that it could be used to frame innocent people by sending them harmless but mal
