Former first lady Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi dies at 97

  Wife of late Nigerian Military Head of State, Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi, Victoria, is dead. The former First Lady died peacefully on Monday morning, August 23 at the age of 97. She would have been 98 on November 21, 2021. Her husband, and the Supreme Commander of the National Military Government, was killed on July 29, 1966. Chief Mrs. Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi never re-married.

My govt lifted 10.5 million Nigerians out of poverty in two years – Buhari

  President Muhammadu Buhari said on Saturday that his govt has lifted 10.5 million Nigerians out of poverty in the past two years. The president said this in his speech to mark the June 12 Democracy Day as he highlighted the successes of his administration and the challenges it faces. “Our overall economic target of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years is our goal notwithstanding COVID-19. “In the last two years we lifted 10.5 million people out of poverty – farmers, small-scale traders, artisans, market women, and the like,” Mr. Buhari said of the successes of his administration’s economic programs. “I am very convinced that this 100 million target can be met and this informed the development of a National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy. The specific details of this accelerated strategy will be unveiled shortly.”

June 12: Nigerian Polytechnic Students Shun NANS President, Asefon’s Directive, Vow To Protest

  The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has asked members of the association to join the nationwide protest slated for tomorrow, June 12 in honor of students of Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Kaduna state, abducted by bandits. Some gunmen had on Thursday night invaded the institution in the Zaria Local Government Area of the state, abducting eight students and two lecturers.  SaharaReporters gathered that a student was also killed while others sustained injuries during the attack. The abducted lecturers are identified as Habila Nasai from the General Studies Department and Adamu Shehu Shika from the Accounting Department.   Chief Executive Officer of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, on Saturday, tweeted the green-white-green Nigerian flag as the West African country marked its 2021 Democracy Day. Dorsey’s tweet, which was posted hours to the ongoing nationwide protests in Nigeria, has since attracted thousands of retweets. Many tweeps including known faces such as @HenshawKate and @mrfestusogun have since hailed the co-founder of the micro-blogging platform for showing solidarity with Nigerian citizens amid the struggle for good governance, a better economy, and an end to the security challenges plaguing over 200 million people living in Nigeria.   The United States Mission in Nigeria on Friday advised its citizens to keep away from planned protests across Nigeria on June 12. Several groups have announced their intentions to protest on June 12, designated as Democracy Day. According to various publicity posters, the protest will make 14 critical demands which are: Abolish 1999 constitution, end terrorism, end banditry, Isa Pantami must go (Minister of Communications and Digital Economy who expressed sympathy for terrorists), Free all detained activists, end insecurity, justice for all EndSARS victims. Others are Free Kogi2 (Two anti-President Muhammadu Buhari protesters – Larry Emmanuel and Victor Anene Udoka – who are being detained in Kogi State), Buhari Must Go, Revert electricity tariffs, End ASUP (Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics) strike, Revert fuel price, Revert party deregistration, and Free Nicholas Mbah.
